Open University’s Prof. Paz Beniamini Receives Blavatnik Award
The Blavatnik Award is a prestigious award, recognizing the contribution of scientists to their
field. It honors outstanding scientific achievements
and innovative research with the potential to address significant challenges. This year, Prof. Paz Beniamini, an astrophysicist at the Open University
of Israel and Head of the University’s Astrophysics Research Center, was named a recipient of this award.
Prof. Beniamini is the first researcher from the Open University of Israel to receive the award and the first astrophysicist to be recognized with this distinction.
The award recognizes Prof. Beniamini’s groundbreaking theoretical and observational research into some of the most extreme phenomena in the universe. His research focuses on, among other areas, fast radio bursts, gamma-ray bursts, highly magnetized neutron stars, and cosmic events responsible for the formation of some of the heaviest elements in the universe, including gold and platinum.
By combining theoretical models with innovative astronomical observations Prof. Beniamini’s research helps uncover the physical mechanisms underlying astrophysical phenomena and advances our understanding of the most energetic events in the universe.
One of his notable achievements is research in which Prof. Beniamini and his colleagues constrained the size of the source of a fast radio burst located approximately 200 million light-years from Earth, demonstrating that it is smaller than a planet. The achievement illustrates how detailed information about distant objects in the universe can be inferred even without directly resolving them.
Open University’s Prof. Yagil Levy Receives Robin M, Jr. Williams Award
Prof. Yagil Levy, the Head of The Open University Institute for the Study of Civil-Military Relations has received the Robin M, Jr. Williams Award for Distinguished Contributions to Scholarship, Teaching, and Service, from the Section on Peace, War, and Social Conflict of the American Sociological Association (ASA).
Prof. Levy’s research focuses on civil-military relations, civilian oversight of the military, militarism, and the ways in which social and political processes shape the military and patterns of the use of force.
Over the years, Prof. Levy has published numerous books and articles in Israel and internationally, taught generations of students, and played a significant role in shaping the field of civil-military relations. Levy is also an active public sociologist who since 2006 has regularly contributed to the Press.
The award recognizes his sustained academic work, and contribution to research, teaching, and to the wider professional community.
