Academia in High School: A Springboard to the Future
Before becoming one of the world’s leading figures in artificial intelligence, Dr. Ilya Sutskever, Co-Founder and CEO of Safe Superintelligence Inc. and Co-Founder and Former Chief Scientist of OpenAI was already pursuing advanced academic studies while still in high school.
His early path included the Open University of Israel’s Academia in High School program, which gives exceptionally talented and motivated students the opportunity to take rigorous university-level courses alongside their high school studies. Sutskever began his academic education at the Open University of Israel when he was just 13 years old and moved to Canada at 16, where he completed his degrees in mathematics and computer science.
Sutskever went on to become one of the most influential figures in modern AI, helping launch the deep learning revolution and contributing to groundbreaking developments including AlexNet, sequence-to-sequence learning, and the GPT models. He co-founded OpenAI in 2015, where under his leadership as Chief Scientist, the company achieved the research breakthroughs that led to large language models and the launch of ChatGPT. In 2024, he co-founded Safe Superintelligence Inc., an AI research lab dedicated to developing safe superintelligence.
