U.S. Ambassador Dan Shapiro Visits Open University Campus in Raanana

U.S. Ambassador Dan Shapiro accepts welcome gift from Professor Hagit Messer-Yaron, President of the Open University of Israel.

U.S. Ambassador Daniel Shapiro visited the award-winning main campus of the Open University in Raanana on December 26, 2012.  “It was a good visit,” Ambassador Shapiro said, “at The Open University, which is a very innovative and very unusual university.”

The Ambassador toured the library and state-of-the art video studios and visited the student-oriented call center, the University’s publishing house which produces over a million textbooks each year, and Israel’s largest post office located right on campus which mails tens of thousands of study kits to students every semester.

Ambassador Shapiro held a town hall meeting, responding to qauestions from students on the Raanana Campus and four other OUI Study Centers across the country.

Ambassador Shapiro engaged in a vibrant discussion with students and faculty about U.S.-Israel relations and regional issues in a changing world.  “I gave a talk and had a town hall meeting with students here on the campus in Raanana,” the Ambassador explained, “and with other students participating from four remote locations – from Jerusalem, from Haifa, from Beersheba and from Ramat Aviv.”

“That’s just an example of the way the Open University reaches out to students all over Israel and really all over the world,” Ambassador Shapiro concluded, “and I think it presents opportunities for us to work together in the future.”
